Response to «Does a Flash Drive Weigh More Full?»
I had some follow-up questions to Caleb's post Does a Flash Drive Weigh More Full? 1:
How does magnetic media compare? I'm curious about hard drives and older storage like floppy disks and archival tape.
- My guess would be that they're similar to flash drives, but using magnetization / polarization instead of shifting electrons.
What about optical media? I suppose there's a few variations here to consider too: pressed discs, burned discs, and re-writable burned discs. My guesses:
- Pressed discs would all weigh the same despite differences in data, since the plastic is being compressed during manufacturing
- Burned discs might weigh differently: does some of the melted plastic become smoke? It'd have to be a very small amount, since we don't see smoke come from our CD-R drives.
- Re-writable burned discs would weight the same: the plastic is just melted differently.
